In Fly Fishing the Stock Market, Dr. Stephen Morris compares his method for trading stocks with his favorite past time, fly fishing and providing fresh insights into his successful trading approach. Engaging and accessible, this book skillfully describes how Morris applied this approach to generate an astounding 268% growth in his account in the volatile and confusing, post-financial crisis markets. Morris explains how he uses technical indicators to determine what he calls the “market season” and how he then zeros in on individual stock patterns to make his trades. He also reveals unique tools, such as the Market Timing Monitor and Weather Station, which give him a sense of the market’s long-term condition and provides the basis for his trading and risk management strategies.
In this engaging and accessible book, Dr. Stephen Morris describes how he generated astounding growth in his trading account during the volatile and confusing post-crisis financial markets. An expert fly fisherman, Morris explains that much like trading, successful fly fishing requires both an understanding of big-picture conditions and the ability to implement tactical techniques to land that prizewinning catch. As Morris explains, both fly fishing and trading require three psychological traits: passion, patience, and persistence.
Drawing on the teachings of Dr. Alexander Elder, Dr. Morris reveals how he integrated elements of Elder’s approach to create his own distinctive method. With the same passion he has for fishing, Morris details how he uses technical indicators to determine what he calls the “market season” and then zeroes in on individual stock patterns to make his trades. Morris also reveals unique tools, such as the Weathervane and Weather Station, which give him a sense of the market’s long-term condition and provides the basis for his trading and risk management strategies. By learning to deploy various tools, interpret their messages, and understand their interaction with each other and with prices, anyone can increase their skill and success as a trader.
Using actual examples from his trading experience, Morris offers an in-depth explanation of his approach to the market and provides a portrait of how a successful trader develops a method and implements it in real time. In addition to the illustrative examples, tools, and rules for placing orders, the book’s companion website contains material that allows a trader to hone his skills in a hands-on fashion.
Just as a fly fisherman is in tune with each step in his process—matching the seasonal hatch, hooking up with a strike indicator, playing the fish with drag, and reeling it in—traders must constantly adjust their trading method to accommodate ever-changing market conditions. This book will help you achieve this elusive goal and consistently land winning trades.

I’ve always struggled to find information about trading/investing that is presented in a simple format and easy to understand. The analogies contained within the book make many concepts very easy to understand and you can immediatiely apply what is being taught. I’m not the biggest fisherman and was told by a close friend to read the book; that being said, it was still easy to follow. For me this book has taken a lot of the guesswork out of trading and opened my eyes to a lot of patterns and trends. Overall, I would say that it is definetily worth the read.

Fly Fishing the Stock Market is one of the best books I have ever read about finding hidden stocks ready to move in the stock market. Stephen Morris is a very good writer, so he makes it interesting and easy to convey his message. I have read his book, and have applied his Bottom Up strategy with great success. Many books are way too technical to understand, but not his method of “Matching the Hatch”, in chapter 8, where he explains his bottoms up, or down strategy with great clarity. I would strongly recommend his book to anyone, especially a beginner.

I am an orthodontist too, who is trading for over 20 years and has bought way over 500 trading books. This one is in my opinion one of the worst trading books I habe ever bought. It is am mixture for beginning and advanced traders with no real meat. It is a cheap imitation of Dr. Elders work, so you better read his books. I am sorry I cannot give a better feedback about this book, but I was totally disappointed. I am not a fisher man.

This is one of the best books on trading that I have read. It gives you a concise road map on setting up profitable trades. I loved the analogies to fishing which helped to simplify the system which Mr. Morris explains in great detail. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone who wants to have a clear map to make money in the stock market.

A few months before this book was published, I had the unique opportunity to attend an investment seminar where Mr. Morris was speaking. The methods he promoted and his rationale were compelling. Being a trust-but-verify, well, rather a verify-then-trust type of person, I did some back-testing of his selection methods, which proved superior to what I had been using. Then I applied his technical methods. Over the last year, my returns have improved specifically because of this powerful combination. I am an experienced trader, and I highly recommend this book even for newer traders. The methods in the book are clearly presented and easy to implement.
