The purpose of Day Trading With Short Term Price Patterns and Opening Range Breakout is to determine tradable market tendencies. The book is divided into five sections, titled 1) Opening Range Breakout. 2) Short Term Price Patterns. 3) Contraction and Expansion. 4) The Integration. 5) Other Useful Patterns.
- Opening range breakout is defined as a trade taken at a predetermined amount off the open.
- A short term price pattern is an analysis of recent price action in terms of previous closes, openings, range size and moves off the open.
- The Contraction/Expansion Principle states that the market is constantly changing from a period of movement to a period of rest and back to a period of movement.
- The three concepts, ORB, price patterns, and contraction/expansion, provide the basic framework for viewing the market.
- The patterns which have previously been discussed are not the only ones which Crabel has discovered.

Book was in excellent shape. Shipping was expedient as well. I trade off the opening range with crude oil futures and have received great success.

The main ideas in the book have to do with expansion and contraction in volatility and moves off the open (Opening Range Breakouts).

The backstory on this book is that it was released but like most other great trading systems they should stay a secret because once the public gets a hold of a concept it no longer works. Crabel being the brilliant UFC grad and Wisconsin resident that he is realized the mistake and tried to purchase back all of the copies in existence at the time and thus driving up the price of the book. Today some of the strategies may still work with careful diligence and testing.

Summary from my full length review – The first trading book that gives price data the proper rigorous treatment. Statistics and biases are summarized across several markets. The framework that Mr. Crabel developed back then 20+ years ago is still valid today. Great insights that shaped the trading principles of many famous traders nowadays. One of the best trading classics of all time.

This book is THE source for open range breakout material and theory. The material still stands as solid and can teach you the meat.

Toby is a successful hedge fund manager, having worked for Victor Niederhoffer before starting his own company. Toby’s returns are good, but his risk management is far better. Toby’s funds have grown primarily due to his excellent risk management skills as opposed to his returns.
