The 5 Day Momentum Method is a focused, rules-based trading manual built around one core idea: short-term price momentum follows repeatable structural patterns when markets transition from balance to imbalance. Jeff Cooper, known for his work on momentum and time-based market behavior, distills this concept into a compact methodology designed for active traders who want clarity, precision, and disciplined execution rather than indicator overload.

At the heart of the book is the “5-Day” framework—a practical way to interpret how price behaves after compression, failed breakouts, and short-term exhaustion. Cooper explains how momentum often accelerates after a brief pause and how traders can position themselves early by recognizing specific price sequences rather than reacting late. The method emphasizes reading what price is doing instead of predicting what it should do.

Rather than relying on oscillators or complex indicators, the book focuses on raw price action, bar-by-bar logic, and time-based context. Cooper walks the reader through how markets set traps, how false moves reveal intent, and how short-term momentum aligns with larger market structure. Risk is treated as a first-class component: entries, exits, and invalidation points are always defined before the trade is taken.

The strength of The 5 Day Momentum Method lies in its simplicity and adaptability. The framework can be applied across stocks, indices, and futures, and it integrates naturally with professional trading discipline. This is not a theoretical book—it is a concise trading playbook intended to sharpen execution, improve timing, and reduce emotional decision-making in fast-moving markets.

I’ve read 3 of Jeff Cooper’s books and they all contain very useful information. Before you buy this book you may want to get a sample of his techniques and commentary on tradehard.com. I use his techniques and this website everyday to look for trades. It’s a great book and site! Highly recommedend reading…

An expensive book. But value is not depended on its cost. It actually provide a simple but useful entry method to you. However, is it a holy grail or super trading system? Certainly not! Useful method will only provide its goodness when using it properly (eg. using good money management) Having read many many books I didn’t find any special power on all of them. But if you really don’t have any trading edge method in hand, read it.

Jeff Cooper is no different than most other writers of stock market books. He makes his money from selling books. Cynical? Not really. If he in fact does make any money from trading in real life, other than what his father probably left him, it’s because he has an endless source of seed money coming in from the people who buy his books. I read his book at Barnes & Noble. It didn’t cost me anything. Also, to trade his method (which isn’t really different from any other day traders or momentum traders methods) requires a sophisticated order entry system. Using E-trade, Daytek, Ameritrade, etc., or any of the usual online brokers won’t allow you to get in and out of the trades at the prices you want. And if you put in mechanical stops instead of mental stops, the market makers will stop you out every time as you sit on the sidelines fuming, as your stock moves up. The fact that Cooper didn’t explain this very important point makes me question his credibility. He should have also told you that you really need Level II quotes software to trade this way. Save your money and do your own research. It’s not that hard to find stocks that are gapping up from good news, favorable earnings or because some leading brokerage upped a stock’s rating to a strong buy.

This manual may not be big in number of pages , but the information is priceless .I don’t care if it was wrote on 50 pages of Toilet paper ! Mr. Cooper gave me 2 very important things I was missing in my Trading and I’ve been even more profitable for it .I HIGHLY RATE this manual.

Slow down folks.. This book (that’s a stretch) gives the trader a concrete system that works in both upwards and downward markets. It’s a trend following system that suggest you buy when top performing stocks take a breather (very smart) and then, most importantly… The book gives you a target to sell. Sell on the fifth day for those without discipline (me) or keep a tight moving stop. Your telling me you can’t justify $15 to learn this?? The one downfall is that you can rarely buy at the 1/8 above previous high. It’s a great and simple system that will pay for itself in spades..

Simple Concept, Short Read, But Not a Magic Formula

Jeff Cooper’s *The 5 Day Momentum Method* is a short manual built around a single, very specific trading idea: buy (or short) high-momentum stocks after a short pause, then exit five days later. In essence, it’s a swing trading blueprint aimed at catching quick bursts of movement without watching screens all day.

The concept itself is elegantly simple and easy to grasp, especially for traders who already follow momentum or breakout strategies. Cooper explains his method clearly, with straightforward rules for entries, stops, and exits. He also emphasizes discipline—setting orders and walking away, rather than getting trapped in emotional intraday decisions.

However, this isn’t a step-by-step guide for beginners. It assumes you already have a broker with fast execution, an understanding of price action, and the ability to screen for strong momentum stocks. At just over 60 pages, it’s more of a trading pamphlet than a full course. The ideas work best in trending markets with volatility and liquidity; in choppy or low-volume conditions, you’ll likely get whipsawed.

Despite the dated examples (it’s from the late ‘90s), the underlying logic—catching continuation moves after brief pullbacks—still resonates today. But readers expecting a plug-and-play system or “holy grail” will be disappointed.

Bottom line: A compact, worthwhile read for experienced traders who appreciate Jeff Cooper’s style and want a focused, rules-based swing system. Just know that results depend heavily on discipline, execution speed, and market conditions—not the formula alone.
