Mastering the Trade, Third Edition by John F. Carter is a comprehensive manual that bridges the gap between market theory and real-world trading execution. Widely regarded as one of the most complete trading handbooks ever written, this updated edition brings fresh insights, strategies, and tools that empower traders to compete in today’s fast-moving markets.
Carter, a professional trader with decades of experience, combines his personal journey with practical techniques to help traders navigate the psychological and technical challenges of trading. The book covers a wide array of topics including intraday trading tactics, swing trading setups, volatility analysis, and the nuances of trading different asset classes such as futures, options, and equities. He explains the mechanics of essential strategies like gap trades, squeezes, and fading extremes, offering readers clear rules for entries, exits, and risk management.
What distinguishes this edition is its updated content that reflects the realities of modern markets—high-frequency trading, algorithmic activity, and changing volatility regimes. Carter integrates new tools, indicators, and trade management methods that adapt to today’s environment. Beyond strategy, he provides guidance on the mental side of trading, emphasizing discipline, confidence, and resilience as key components of long-term success.
Richly illustrated with charts, trade examples, and step-by-step breakdowns, Mastering the Trade is as practical as it is educational. Each chapter is crafted to build the trader’s skills progressively, allowing readers to develop a robust and repeatable approach to the markets.
For serious traders—whether day traders, swing traders, or active investors—this book remains an indispensable resource. It is both a reference and a mentor in print, offering the knowledge, tools, and mindset required to achieve consistent profitability in any market condition.

Great chapters about trading psychology. The technical setups were also very useful.

I learned quite a bit about the way Mr Carter trades and evaluates stock price movement.
Odin McCann (verified owner) –
Excellent read, brought a lot of inspiration and insights
I will also be looking for more books by Mr Carter.

Must read, if you’re thinking of day trading.

This book covers it. Very well written and the subject matter is expertly discussed. Actionable detailed information on setting up various trades makes this a very valuable trader’s resource.
Jimmy Greer (verified owner) –
John Carter is a great trader with many insightful comments.

This book stands above the rest. There are certainly a plethora of trading books available. But if you’re an aspiring trader or established veteran and want solid content delivered in a readable fashion with a touch of humor at just the right time, then this is your book. You’ll receive more proven strategies than you can reasonably use. By the end of the book, you’ll feel equipped to pick the ones that best suit you.

Awesome trader psychology. Very informative.

One of the best books on trading there is. An actual trader giving real ideas and sharing volumes of experience. Turned my trading around with just the tip of trading the YM instead of the ES in conjunction with indicators to track the market.. Thanks John..
Catherine Ingram (verified owner) –
One of the best written on the subject

The book was probably excellent when it was first published, but all these years later it is of little or no use to anyone who has had even six months of experience in trading. Not only are many of the setups and indicators no longer useful (in particular, the Squeeze is virtually worthless on anything shorter-term than a daily chart), but also John Carter himself no longer actively trades futures. The great majority of his trades are in options, and options are not an important element in this book. Furthermore, Carter’s current approach to trading options is based on indicators and methods that are not even contemplated in this book. I understand that he is coming out with a new edition this winter, but in the meantime I would suggest ignoring this one.

Nothing new here.
It’s all in other books without the high price tag.
Follow Warren Buffets technique instead and save your money.
Options are only ok if you can pay close attention and don’t have a regular job.
Zaire Williamson (verified owner) –
Excellent

This book is ok, but author needs to cut off unneeded stuff. 500 page book on trading can become more readable 300 page book!
Cain Vazquez (verified owner) –
John gives very specific details on technical analysis which has helped me in my trading. He writes well and is not redundant. I’m SO glad I managed to get a copy of this before these outrageous prices came into effect. No wonder his new book isn’t selling.
