Trade Like an O’Neil Disciple: How We Made Over 18,000% in the Stock Market in 7 Years is a detailed look at how to trade using William O’Neil’s proven strategies and what it was like working side-by-side with Bill O’Neil. Under various market conditions, the authors document their trades, including the set ups, buy, add, and sell points for their winners. Then, they turn the magnifying glass on themselves to analyze their mistakes, including how much they cost them, how they reacted, and what they learned.
Author’s Introduction:
This book is our attempt to articulate what we learned from Bill O’Neil, working directly with him under fire in real-time while trading the markets. But first a disclaimer: this book is not sanctioned by or approved by Bill O’Neil or William O’Neil + Co., Inc. Our interpretation and views may not be those of Bill or the company. This book explains how we trade based on our learning experience as proprietary traders at William O’Neil + Co., Inc.
This book is also not about the CAN SLIM R methodology. Readers are encouraged to read Bill’s seminal work (and all his other books), How to Make Money in Stocks, and to refer to Investor’s Business Daily and investors.com. Between Bill’s excellent books, the reporting in the paper, and the web site, there is a plethora of tutorials and educational materials that detail O’Neil’s methods. We encourage you to make good use of these books and tools.
Trade Like an O’Neil Disciple is our unique experience with this man who we feel is likely the world’s greatest investor. In this book we provide insights into O’Neil’s genius as we saw it. We track the markets of the late 1990s and early 2000s with real-time excerpts from our trading diaries that bear witness to O’Neil’s incredible investment genius. In realtime, O’Neil embodies the Latin term speculari, which means “to spy out or examine” as he perceives subtle shifts in the market, almost by osmosis. In this book we hope to provide insight into some of his thought processes, as we saw them unfold, using real-time market examples.

I read Morales & Kacher’s “Short Selling with the O’neil Disciples” first, then “In the Trading Cockpit” and thirdly, “Trade Like an O’Neil Disciple.” I would recommend reading them in the opposite order than what I did.
Bottom line, All of these books are excellent for people who want to understand trading. I have learned so much. I thought I knew a bit about the stock market at trading before reading these. Having read them and having put what they say in practice, I can say that I knew only 1% about trading. Now, I know much more! I thank the authors for sharing their knowledge!
What I like about the books is that they are practical and help the reader sit in the seat of the trader during the trade. They are loaded with real examples with charts simple explanations of what was traded, when and why.
With so many trading systems out there in book and on the Internet, I value their OWL philosophy which is really modern tape reading made simple.

Charles MasseyI am a huge fan of IBD and I have been trading stocks for over 20 years using the information from Bill O’Neil but it was great to read about two of his traders and their perspective. These guys are flat out great ! For whatever reason I am drawn to momentum trading and using charts and the philosophy in these pages just sings to me. This book should be read at least twice since it is very dense and with all the examples demonstrated with charts, the flow is tough to skim through. Highly recommended if you are a fan of IBD.

Excellent book! A must read for all serious investors. Firstly master all O’Neil’s techniques, secondly read and reread this book, and finally see the tremendous results.

I read this book and it sounded OK. But my story is about their service which is why they are selling this book to get you hook up. They were touting 3 digit return on a mode based on VIX and I carefully examined their trades and all looked good and reasonable. Little did I know that they kept twisting the model and the results were just from testing, not real trading. After I started trading using their signals, they removed a safeguard WITHOUT notifying their subscribers. On one day, my account went down 30% because the risk was too high without the safeguard! Wow.
These person are just charltons without any regards to their customers or subscribers. (If you don’t know yet. Their fund went down 77% and a lot of people lost a great deal. Go to archive(dot)org and search gilmoralesfundperformance(dot)com)
By the way, I am not a quitter and I got my 30% back through other trading methods…

I’ve read the first few chapters of this book and may as well get the O’Neil book because they keep quoting O’Neil. They have some good info but after the first few chapters, I wish I would have just bought one of the O’Neil books. If you’re a true believer of Covel’s trend following, then I’m not sure that I would recommend getting this book since they give a lot of complicated chart patterns to follow. What I’ve learned from some of the trend following is that it’s not that complicated and that the chart patterns will always look how you want them to. They have a lot of technical indicators that can be also found on the Investors Business Daily site. They do give a lot of examples of stocks they’ve bought and show charts to show when they got it and out of the stock. I’m no expert at all but I don’t think I’d buy this book again. I did read Nicholas Darvy’s book and that seems to be the best example of a simple way to get in/get out of the market.

It’s a great break overall. The strategies and methods reinforce what I’ve read in other books, which helps builds confidence in taking trades. The more you read the better. The “extra” information and resources at the end of the book is what I found most useful.
