A Complete Guide to Technical Trading Tactics presents a structured framework for analyzing and trading futures, options, stock indexes, and related derivative markets using technical analysis methodologies centered around pivot points, candlestick charting, momentum indicators, and trader psychology. John L. Person combines practical market experience with quantitative techniques to create a tactical trading approach designed for active market participants.
The book begins by establishing a foundational understanding of futures and options markets, including leverage, margin, contract specifications, exchange functions, and electronic trading infrastructure. It then transitions into the core drivers of market behavior through both fundamental and technical analysis, emphasizing how price, sentiment, and market psychology interact within actively traded markets.
A central theme throughout the book is the integration of pivot point analysis with multiple forms of confirmation, including candlestick formations, moving averages, Fibonacci ratios, stochastics, market sentiment indicators, Elliott Wave concepts, and cycle analysis. Rather than relying on a single indicator, the author demonstrates how traders can create layered confirmation models to improve timing, risk management, and execution precision.
The later sections focus heavily on practical trading application, including swing trading, day trading, order placement, options strategies, scaling techniques, momentum setups, and psychological discipline. The book positions trading as a professional process requiring preparation, emotional control, structured planning, and consistent tactical execution rather than prediction alone.

I bought “Technical Trading Tactics” & “Candlestick and Pivot Point Trading Triggers” Both by John Person.
I have to say 1st that I haven’t as yet completed the 2nd book, but finding both books a little heavy and intense, the information he is passing on, is top notch stuff, it’s just that it’s very heavy going to read, if this guy could lighten up a little, then, 5 out of 5, without a doubt.
I am a newbie when it comes to Forex, hence the books, sticking with what he tells you, will see you earn, it’s that simple, but how he putt’s it over is “as I have said already” heavy going.
Would I recommend these books, YES
Without a doubt.
May Forex Smile on you with favour,

Lots of interesting sets up in this book.
A good addition to John Carter’s Master the Trade.
Good purchase.

Although I have enjoyed and learned a lot from many books from Wiley Trading, I found this book to be a waste of time.
The author goes on at length about the importance of candlestick chart reading, only to later disavow everything by warning reader that “there is no guarantee they [chart formations] will develop like the textbook examples.” (p.92)
Similarly, the examples showing the usefulness of pivot point analysis seem cherry-picked.
Much of the advice is generic and simplistic, and of little to no use to someone looking to improve their trading by developing their technical analysis skills.

The best short term trading book you can get. If you trade the markets and don’t know anything about pivot points, YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!!! If you don’t trade the markets but are thinking about it, YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!!! Excellent information on technical analysis without being too technical:)

After hearing an introductory lecture by John Person, I bought his book. It put together futures trading for me using techniques which I can apply. I then subscribed to Person’s newsletter and attended a one day course. Now I am making money and can anticipate market moves. Person’s book and Technical Analysis from A to Z by Achelis are my reference books.John is a great teacher.

John Person provides an excellent overview of necessary trading tools. I learned a great deal from his book and his seminars. The best part about his book is that he is a trader by profession and the information he provides he utilizes. This book is a must have for traders interested in increasing their consistency and profits from trading

I started my career reading books from the likes of John J. Murphy, Steve Nison, McMillan, Elder, Bulkowski, etc…
This book can sit on my shelf in equal company from each of these other great analysts.
Thanks for your insight and guidance John, it is sincerely appreciated.
I especially enjoyed the section on Pivot Points.

The technical tactics and techniques described in this book have already helped me to start making a profit in forex trading on a more consistent basis.
This book’s explanation on how to place orders and the different types are the best I’ve read so far.
Pivot Points used in conjunction with Candlesticks is what I have been using to trade currencies and so far the results have been very satisfying. Thank you Mr Person for writing this most excellent book!

This book is very easy to read and follow a lot of concepts the author has mentioned. It provides a very good trading guidelines about how to make a trading decision based on the pivot point calculation and candlestick charting technique. If you know a little bit of candlestick charting, you would enjoy this book very much. In addition, it warns the traders to utilize other technical indicators as well. The more technical indicators support your conclusion, the better of placing a successful trade in the spot market. As you know every technique has some pitfalls. The author mentions that “Once in a while you will lose your shirt, but do not lose your pants because the money is in the wallet.”. A very true statement. The trader always tries to survive for the next trading opportunity. I have started incorporating a lot of concepts in my trading decisions. I would encourage every trader to read this book. Learning is the ultimate way of surviving in this very volatile market.

John L. Person is not only a brilliant trader, but more importantly a very wise and level-headed individual, at least from what I can gather after reading this book. He has a very clear understanding of what it takes to be a successful trader, as well as a very comprehensive understanding of the tools that are required to be at such a level of consistency.
If you can approach this book with a open mind about all the issues he delves into, you will be undoubtedly put in the right direction to success. This is definately one of the best books I have read on trading, from an overall perspective. I only wish someone had referred it to me before I read the 15+ other books prior to obtaining a copy of this one, because it definately would have sped up my learning process.
For whatever it is worth, I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone and everyone who is the field of trading and isn’t already highly accomplished (in fact, this select group may even benefit from his carefully selected quotes at the start of each chapter – they are all amazing).

This book is for the beginner and offers no information that cannot be found (for free) on other internet sites. It appears as if the author has written this book to make his methodology clearer to himself and in the process decided to sell it as a book. No earth shattering revelations to be found and definately not enough good quality examples.
A bit disappointed in the content but this book will be a good read for an absolute newbie in the field.

For anyone interested in a clearly written and easily understood book which explains how to profitably trade Stock Index and Futures products, this should fit the bill.
John Person writes as he speaks, in a conversational manner that gives the reader the feeling that he’s learning from someone who has been in the business for over 25 years, and who wants to help others as he was helped during his career.
John, as I came to find out, is a much sought-after lecturer, and he goes into the various trading techniques including the use of Pivot Points, Candlesticks,
Cycle Analysis, and other indicators, as well as the mental aspects of Trading, which was very important to me.
The book has made a big impact on me and my personal trading, because of the clarity of the author’s words and explanations. I would definately recommned this to anyone who is looking for a book that is easy to understand and is chock full of useful tips and examples.

I agree with a couple of posts that say this is a very basic book, and that most of the information could be found for free on the internet. I would go as far as to say that some information would be better if read on the internet.
The examples about pivots (the key part of the book), one chart after another were not easy to follow. The section on TA was woefully lacking. The author has a section on Gann theory, and more or less advises to go buy the book that Gann wrote. As it turns out, there is some pretty rich information about Gann on the web.
My biggest pet peeve about this book were the continual subliminal references (advertisements) to the author’s subscription based website. Besides that, I did not like the blatent plugging of the people who praised his book on the back cover. It’s okay for an author to put their website on the back of the book. If the information stands on it’s own then I can go to the website to learn more. What’s not cool is to give vauge trading strategies, then give some glowing account of how your subscription newsletter called the shots.
I did give the book two stars, which means I wasn’t totally disapointed. He does stress a couple of good points regarding pivots, but it’s all pretty basic beginner stuff.

I like the book and learn some. It was a little basic for me , but it is always good to review the basic.

Summary from my full length review – A guided tour on trading with technical tools by a trading veteran. The way the materials are presented makes you feel confident in the techniques but there is a lack of depth. Often mentioned is the online service provided by Mr. Person that makes it feel like he has withhold important clues on using those tools. Some people may find this book a good read and easier to understand comparing to other guided tour style introductory books.

In this book, the author expands on basic trading strategies to include more advanced methodologies such as, Fibonacci ratios, Pivot points, cycle analysis in combination with Candlestick charts, and several others. In addition the author uses these techniques in interesting ways. As an example Fibonacci ratio adjustments are used to relate previous stock prices with current ones, and then combined with pivot points to estimate a stock’s price inflection point. Cycle analysis is used in conjunction with candlestick charts to predict market turning points etc. I believe that the Fibonacci ratios presentation in the book by Roberts miner “high probability trading strategies” is a more complex expansion on the ideas in this book.
The author also discusses the psychological aspects of trading that are quite important to success. Even though there are many books that do this , I felt his guidelines were among the best especially for novice traders that encounter stumbling blocks in their journey to profitable trading.

This is in my opinion a valuable desk-side reference book for market technical trading.
A great introduction or primer, based upon your experience, with many technical stock trading indicators and tools. When to use and how to use many technical indicators and tools are explained in clear and concise detail. Unlike many similar books, the liberal use of drawings and sample charts had been reviewed to insure clarity and delivery of the message tying together the text and the chart. Because understanding chart reading is applicable across most asset classes such as stocks, commodities, options, ETFs etc, the example charts in this book have a liberal use of various assets such as oil, gold, FX and of course stocks. In addition, liberal reference to applicability of what indicators and tools are used for the various trading styles. For example; day traders, active traders or swing traders as well as long term (buy and hold).
Lastly, many other ideas, topics, tips and techniques are included in this book. Such as; ordering types, mental and emotional aspects of trading, trading journals, introduction to options, a glossary and much more.
I have found this to be a great book to read and keep for reference. And the ROI on the purchase of this book has been measured in days.
