Description

Few trading experiments in financial history are as legendary as Richard Dennis’s “Turtle Trader” program — an audacious social experiment that turned complete novices into million-dollar market winners. In The Complete Turtle Trader, Michael Covel chronicles the true story behind this experiment and reveals the specific trading principles that transformed ordinary people into disciplined, rule-based trend followers. Covel combines gripping storytelling with analytical clarity to expose how trading psychology, systematic thinking, and strict risk control created one of the most remarkable success stories ever documented.

Through rare interviews, historical data, and firsthand accounts, the book reconstructs how Dennis proved that trading mastery could be taught — provided the students followed a system. The Turtles’ approach, built on price-based breakouts, volatility adjustments, and money management rules, still defines modern trend following. Covel moves beyond myth to explain the mindset, the process, and the enduring lessons that separate disciplined traders from gamblers.

This isn’t just a chronicle of a famous experiment — it’s a masterclass in developing an unemotional, systematic edge in chaotic markets. Readers gain insight into behavioral biases, market randomness, and the power of simplicity when paired with consistency and conviction.

  5. Kelley Ewing (verified owner)

It describe nothing about the turtles system and how they see the market.

  6. Hunter Bentley (verified owner)

The book tells the story of the students who learned to trade using the trend following method. The book doesn’t give you trading advice or methodology but it does provide many lessons regarding the life of traders

  7. Shari Burch (verified owner)

Good story about trading and how it does not neeed to be linked with high academic achievements. Though if traders are looking for tips, unlikely, there are anything in this book that will give you specific tips. Chapter 4 and 5 did highlight techniques and winning edges. Easy read compared to other trading books!

  8. Pasquale Griffin (verified owner)

Interesting read. But if you are wanting to get some kind of special knowledge of the markets or trading, it’s not really that kind of book imo. Worth reading.

  9. Reid Johnson (verified owner)

This book should be in every professional and beginner trader’s library. I wish I red this book sooner. I enjoyed this book and learned a lot from the experiences discussed. Thanks to everyone who had a part in this publication. Thank you to the traders who shared their story! I admire your drive, determination and grace. Thanks for sharing your stories.

This is about people and the mind of a trader. It’s more psychology than technical trading. I would read this again.

  11. Kathryn Wagner (verified owner)

This is an amazing story of the how the turtles were formed and the awesome trader Richard Dennis. You get an in depth account of their life and the success they achieved as the Turtles.
    I loved the book.

  12. Rogelio Mayo (verified owner)

It was great book to learn how to trade. It was great knowledge.

  13. Dorian Orozco (verified owner)

I read every page slowly. This a very well researched book. I would say it’s a classic tale of human nature. The question of putting the turtles together was ultimately, what makes a successful trader? Is it an infallible system or innate ability you are born with. The markets of the world don’t really care. The question is where is the sweet spot in the opportunity. This book will take you on an incredible journey of a reality that was conjured out of thin air. The want ads for the turtle trading system remind me of the tickets to Willy Wonka‘s chocolate factory. What is really interesting is all the characters behind the story and how they emerged.

Item as described and worked as expected. No issues or concerns!

  15. Jenna Peck (verified owner)

This book reveals nothing about the rules and techniques of the Turtle traders. It is a promotional book for his $2000 class In the book he is harsh with Curtis Faith without cause. I wonder if his criticism of Faith is because he actually wrote a book with disclosing the rules and techniques. Find “Way of the Turtles” by Curtis Faith. One thing this book discloses is the dislike of the Turtles for the author. It reminds me of the old saying “Those that can; Do! Those that can’t teach!” He wants big dollars for disclosing a system other have developed.

Chronicles the remarkable story of the “Turtle Experiment,” an initiative by trading legends Richard Dennis and Bill Eckhardt in the 1980s. Believing that anyone could be taught to trade successfully, they recruited a diverse group of novices, who became known as the “Turtles.”

The Turtles were trained in trend-following strategies, focusing on identifying and capitalizing on market trends using technical analysis and strict rules for trade entries and exits. This disciplined approach, combined with rigorous risk management, was key to their success.

Despite their lack of prior trading experience, many Turtles achieved significant financial success, validating Dennis’s belief that trading skills could be taught. The book delves into the training process, the specific strategies employed, and the psychological aspects crucial to their performance.

  17. Josefina Conrad (verified owner)

This is an inspiring story, but it’s so much more than the subtitle and teasers allude. If you are interested in trading, read this book.

  18. Melvin Terrell (verified owner)

Great read. I have heard this story a few time but never really got the details. This book outlines the age old question of nature vs. nurture. Can ordinary people be trained to beat the market or do they need an extraordinary skillset? Richard Dennis was one of the greatest traders of all time.
