J. Peter Steidlmayer’s 141 West Jackson is a personal and intellectual exploration of one of the most innovative thinkers in modern trading. Known as the creator of Market Profile™, Steidlmayer transformed how traders interpret market behavior, and this book offers a rare glimpse into his journey of discoveries and insights that shaped decades of trading practice.
Rather than presenting a rigid manual, 141 West Jackson is structured as a reflective narrative, where Steidlmayer recounts his experiences at the Chicago Board of Trade and shares the thought processes behind his breakthroughs. He illustrates how he came to view markets not as chaotic price movements, but as structured auctions driven by human interaction, supply and demand, and evolving perceptions of value.
The book explores the core principles that underpin Market Profile, including the importance of value areas, time-price opportunities, and the balance between buyers and sellers. Yet it also moves beyond technical concepts, touching on philosophy, creativity, and the mindset required to observe markets with clarity. Steidlmayer emphasizes curiosity, observation, and the willingness to challenge conventional wisdom—qualities that enabled him to create one of the most enduring analytical frameworks in trading.
What makes this work unique is its blend of autobiography, market theory, and trading philosophy. Steidlmayer brings readers into his world at the heart of Chicago’s financial district, while also inspiring them to think differently about market structure and their own role as traders.
For students of Market Profile and auction market theory, 141 West Jackson provides essential context to understand not only the “how” but also the “why” behind Steidlmayer’s concepts. For experienced traders, it offers an invaluable reminder of the power of perspective, innovation, and continuous learning.
Ultimately, this is a book about discovery—of markets, of methods, and of oneself as a trader. Steidlmayer’s journey shows that the greatest advantage in trading comes not just from tools, but from cultivating a mindset of exploration and adaptability.

Another great book from Peter Steidlmayer.
With it you better understand the market’s functioning and learn some basic principles regulating everyday activity.
It is useful but in some instances very academic.

This book constitutes the best theoretical approach to trading available today. I have read it twice and loved it even more the second time through. I have read every book related to Market Profile and this one is the best by far. Steidlmayer has attempted to define the market through an approach that structures the markets background and foreground at the same time, while both are endlessly developing. The first 78 pages are pure gold, but after that you get off into MP heuristics that were understandable considering Mr. Steidlmayer was at the forefront of market theory in his day and attempted to fit the markets complexity into a bell curve type structure that was meant for statistical understanding alone. He was and probably still is a market genius whose musings are priceless!!
