Trend Commandments: Trading for Exceptional Returns by Michael W. Covel is a no-nonsense guide to mastering the principles of trend-following trading. Known for his work on The Complete Turtle Trader and as a leading authority on trend-following systems, Covel distills decades of insights from professional traders into a straightforward and practical book designed for those who want to thrive in uncertain markets.
The book emphasizes that successful trading is not about predicting the future but about following price trends with discipline and consistency. Covel challenges common myths in finance, exposing why traditional forecasting and fundamental analysis often fail traders. Instead, he presents the philosophy and mindset of trend followers—traders who let profits run, cut losses quickly, and adapt to changing conditions without hesitation.
Through sharp commentary and real-world examples, Covel demonstrates how trend following has delivered exceptional results across asset classes, including stocks, futures, currencies, and commodities. He highlights the stories and practices of legendary traders who built fortunes by adhering to simple yet powerful rules. Each “commandment” provides a principle or lesson that reinforces the importance of systematic, rules-based decision-making.
The book is as much about psychology as it is about mechanics. Covel explains that the greatest obstacle to success is not the market but the trader’s own behavior—fear, greed, impatience, and overconfidence. By addressing these psychological barriers, readers learn how to maintain discipline and stay aligned with proven methods even when markets are volatile or confusing.
What sets Trend Commandments apart is its accessibility. Covel strips away complexity and presents the essence of trend following in clear, memorable lessons. He provides traders with the mindset and principles needed to achieve consistency, regardless of their experience level or preferred market.
For traders seeking freedom from emotional decision-making and a roadmap to long-term profitability, Trend Commandments delivers timeless wisdom. It is not about quick fixes or secret formulas but about embracing a proven philosophy that has stood the test of time.

Cover offers an alternative to the usual dogma of investing. The book is an easy read and easy to follow. As an individual investor i found the theories interesting. For those of us who do not follow CNBC or Bloomberg on a daily basis, it shows a possible alternative to investing. The one thing the book does not do is get into specifics. There are no examples of how to realize a trend or what are the components to look for. Cover tells you of the other way but shows no road signs to follow the path.

A well written, must have book for those interested in trend following. Having read over 80 books on trading, Covels books are up there with the best of them. Read it.

Another great read by Michael Covel. Of all the trading styles out there trend following is the one that clicked for me. Now nearly a decade later, it it’s the foundation for all of my trading and has proven itself over and over again. Trend Comandments is a great follow through to Michaels previous two books and a great addition to a trading library.

Mr. Covel goes into detail about Trend following trading, gleaming many ideas from the Turtle Traders experiment in the early 1980’s

Book is alright, it really does not provide investment or trading steps or procedures. It gives some overarching principles but not procedures for screening for stocks or investments.

Disappointing. A few self-evident rules about trend following sprinkled into a mush of cutesy quotations and endless pointlessness. Seems once your a well-known author you lose your own discrimination, but can get anything published. If you want to learn about trading and investing, use your money elsewhere.

just a series of editorials.

Seems a little chatty Kathy informative but not to the point like I would like. I would like it more to the point without all the extra talk that is my opinion.

This book appears to be cobbled together from blog posts, and snippets of Yogi Berra-isms and similar famous quotes that most of us can find by doing a little Googling. A light read on the train ride in, would say.

Great reading for people new to trading and investing, but interesting for those who are experienced as well. How the markets work, why the markets work, and how you can’t possibly know everything that makes markets work. Cut through the chatter and the noise, as well as the complex indicators, and you are left with price action. Learn about price action, and you learn how to spot a new trend. And because nobody can predict the future, even with complex indicators, you will learn to cut losses quick and let the profits run.
This book is one of those tools that help you learn this before you run out of money experimenting on your own.

If you’re into the status quo and believe everything you’re told from financial news, this book is not for you.
If you seek to challenges all the popular market narratives and assumptions, then get this book in order to read and re-read!

In this book Covel provides readers (and listeners) with clear, time-tested advice on how one should think and act in order to be a profitable trend following trader. I’ve listened to it twice now and I plan to listen a third time in order to continue to pick up useful information that I missed the first time through. I loved this book.
