This book offers a modern treatment of Hurst’s original system of market cycle analysis. It will teach you how to get to the point where you can isolate cycles in any freely-traded financial instrument and make an assessment of their likely future course. In this extensive step-by-step guide you will find a full description of the principal tools and techniques taught by Hurst as well as over 120 colour charts, together with tables and diagrams. The Updata and TradeStation code for all of the indicators shown is also included.
Author’s Note:
My experience in financial markets has been gained on the sell side broking Japanese equities for investment banks in both London and Tokyo; and on the buy side as an analyst and trader for an equity long-short fund. My interest in market analysis drew me towards the Market Technicians Association in New York and I hold their CMT designation. I am also currently preparing a thesis for the International Federation of Technical Analysts’ Master of Financial Technical Analysis (MFTA).
My knowledge of Hurst cycle analysis comes principally from studying Hurst’s original material. J.M. Hurst was an American aerospace engineer in the 1960s who applied his understanding of mathematics, computing and engineering to market cycles. The workshop-style course he produced in the early 1970s described in detail the practical application of his cyclic principles to real trading. Apparently only 250 copies of the course were ever produced and after a few years of private seminars, Hurst seems to have simply vanished.
Twenty-five years later Traders Press [1] republished Hurst’s original work. However, because Hurst’s course was written before personal computers were widely available the content is rather difficult for the modern market technician to implement. It is also hard work; but having said that, the course is pretty much essential reading for any serious student of market cycles. The code for all of the indicators used in this book is provided in two programming languages in the appendices. More may be added in the future if there is demand.
The purpose of this book is to get you to the stage where you can perform cyclic analysis on any freely traded financial instrument quickly and effectively on your own system. Do not expect to find it easy to begin with, because it is not. In a short time however you will find that the pieces start falling together, you get the knack and the skills become second nature. Eventually you will not remember why it seemed so hard to start with. Hurst Cycle Analysis is part art, part detective work and part science, and once you have mastered it you will benefit from the outstanding results it is capable of producing. And, what is more, you will begin to see the markets in a completely new light.

It is a great book. It is simple to read and understand. Grafton explained the theory and the practical utility of Hurst Cycles, Valid Trend Lines and FLDs extremely well.

masterpiece from christopher. good book to learn hurst cycle

I bought this as an introduction to Hurst’s work, it does require concentration, but things are well explained with plenty of visual aids. Whether it makes me a better trader is up to me, but a very interesting approach and plenty of food for thought.

Mr Chris Grafton explains the Hurst analysis in a simple manner.Book recommended for understanding technical analysis of time with fixed cycles concept.

A really perfect deep dive into hurst cycles and how to learn them. Good exercises and hands on. Thanks for this great book. 😘

Really a good book (maybe the only one) about Hurst’s cycles.
Olive Lyons (verified owner) –
Qualitative work !
Henry Christensen (verified owner) –
Total garbage. Not a single person actually made money with this nonsense.
Kristian Fowler (verified owner) –
Absolutely NOT VALID in the 21st Century. May have been right decades ago; but not now. Any-and-all ‘cyclic behavior’ the markets once exhibited has since been captured and coded into AI algorithms.
This book is obsolete.
The Markets just moved. You missed it while reading this ; catch up.

I read already “The Profit Magic Of STOCK TRANSACTION TIMING J.M.HURST” and had also some study of John Ehlers material. There was also a training from Hurst but too expensive for me.
The idea was to buy this book instead of the training.
I got a lot of interesting stuff, so I am quite pleased.

I liked this very much.
Manuel Galindo (verified owner) –
very good
Lennon Schmidt (verified owner) –
It is a must read for cycle experts. However, it is not easy to implement the ideas directly on my own. Missing some statistical verification and proof. But overall good ideas and approach!

An excellent modern-day analysis for students of Hurst

An amazing treatise on the subject ! Highly recommended !

I’m a full-time professional options trader and Hurst’s cycle analysis is of great interest to me.I’ve been making slow progress through the many complex concepts. The author does a thorough and patient job of explaining and illustrating Hurst’s ideas. However, in order to properly evaluate the relevance of cycles, I need to examine the analysis tools in real market situations. In the apendices and throughout the book, Mr. Grafton provides links to code for the tools described in the book. Unfortunately, the website (vectisma.com) where the code resides is in “Maintenace Mode” and can’t be accessed. Since I can’t get to the code and use the tools on my own charts, I can’t really determine the worth of cycle analysis. I would be willing to re-evaluate this book if I can see the analysis tools at work.

Cycle is one of the thing one MUST observe while in a investment path.
This on helps you to build it according your investment.
Really cool

Excellent, excellent, excellent (did I say that too many times…sorry, couldn’t be helped) coverage of the Hurst Cycles and how to best utilize them in trading…Plus it includes code for various trading platforms. Chris has done a great job covering a complex and often misunderstood and crucial subject that anyone involved in trading must be familiar. Covers annual, monthly, weekly & daily market cycles and how to correctly plot cycles within cycles to identify trends/trend direction. Well done.

A little too detailed, but good.

It is a thorough and clearly-written book that covers precisely what you need: how to identify cycles in stock market prices and how to apply that knowledge in practice. It is a technical subject, and you can expect to have to re-read sections of the book over and over to fully grasp the message, but it has many practical examples with colored graphical illustrations to help you to understand. Persistence brings its rewards and you quickly learn to appreciate why so many stock prices rise and fall the way they do, and most important of all – when. The knowledge acquired has already spared me from losing money by trading at the wrong cycle time. With practice and repeated reference to the book, I am confident it will help me to profit more from my stock trading in the short and longer terms.

In 2011 the work of J. M. Hurst, considered by many as the father of modern cyclic analysis, enjoyed sudden and renewed interest by the trading community. This translated into several works approaching Hurst’s methods from three different angles.
I’ll start first with the current book. Just as stated by the author, it will help readers get a better grasp and understanding of Hurst’s work, at a fraction of the the cost of his original private course. It will even provide buyers with the relevant code for Tradestation and Updata. This way, if you’re tech savvy and already own one of these charting packages, or don’t mind the additional investment needed to use them, you will be able to experiment further with the concepts covered in the book. Since it contains the code for all the different cycles, channels and other indicators, the author spares the reader the math details of Hurst’s work, which may be for the best, since this has always been one of the stumbling blocks in applying Hurst’s methods.
The self-proclaimed goal of the author is to lead the reader to a stage where he can perform his own cyclic analysis. The bottom line is that how well you master Hurst’s methods after reading this book, as with so many other things in life and trading, will depend solely on how much work you’re willing to put into experimenting with the concepts.
The book ends with a concise summary of the different theories explaining the causes of cycles, which should stimulate even further research into this fascinating subject.
Mr Grafton mentions the Sentient Trader software, by David Hickson, which covers similar ground. The author of that software has, understandably, undertaken a different approach: there is no code sharing, but instead a sleek black box, which generates trading signals based on Hurst’s original work.
There is also the OddsTrader app, by CIT Dates, which is currently the only mobile app that allows users to chart Hurst channels and to use them as the basis for several different trading strategies. It even includes a built-in risk management and position sizing tool.
In summary, if you’re interested in cycles and cyclic analysis, there has hardly been a better time for delving into and exploring the subject.
