All About Investing helps remove that stress, by providing inexperienced investors with techniques for establishing realistic investment goals, buying the proper assets to meet those goals, and constructing a safe and suitable portfolio of long-term investments.
Introduction:
Investing is not easy, and this book attempts to make the investing process less difficult for both beginning and more sophisticated investors. This book was written to provide the necessary knowledge for investing in stocks, bonds, options, futures, real estate, and precious metals. The early chapters discuss the components of constructing an investment portfolio based on each investor’s needs, objectives, and constraints, providing a blueprint for which investments to invest in.
A chapter on how the stock and bond markets work provides investors with the insights and knowledge to avoid the typical mistakes made in buying and selling financial securities. In the mutual fund chapter, exchange-traded-funds (ETFs), the popular alternative to open-end funds, are highlighted and compared to real estate investment trusts (REITs), closed-end and open-end funds. A chapter follows with a discussion of the different money market securities with attention paid to investing in individual money market securities, such as Treasury bills and bankers’ acceptances.
A chapter is devoted to the different types of common stocks with attention paid to the development of a diversified stock portfolio, along with a discussion of the different characteristics of preferred stock. Three chapters are devoted to bonds, beginning with a discussion of the basic characteristics, a presentation of the types of bonds and their key differences, which provides an understanding of how to assemble a bond portfolio (Treasury notes and bonds, Treasury inflation protected securities, corporate bonds, junk bonds, Government agency bonds, GNMA and FNMA securities, and municipal bonds). Zero-coupon bonds and convertible bonds are discussed in a separate chapter.
An understanding of these individual securities provides investors with the tools and knowledge to increase their returns without significantly increasing their risks. The chapters on options and futures contracts provide sophisticated investors with the tools and strategies to take on more risk to magnify their returns.
The last chapter focuses on alternative investments such as real estate, precious metals, and collectibles, and provides the fundamental principles for investors interested in these investments. By understanding the different types of investments you can apply the principles discussed to develop a diversified portfolio, which can lead to financial independence and the achievement of your personal objectives.

This book is intended to give readers an overview of investing. The topics covered in this book are stocks, bonds, mutual funds, money-market securities, treasury securities, options, futures, real estate, precious metals, and collectibles. It also gives readers basic advice such as having an investment strategy and allocating assets among different investment types.
This book alone will not make an investor an expert in any of the topics covered, but it is a good place to start. Everyone who deals with money, which is all of us, should be educated about investments and different investment products.

This is the best book I have found on general investing. It explains stocks, bond, options and other investment avenues very concisely and simply. The best book to start with.

Its a great book to start with but gets very boring midway.
Four stars as it only casually speaks all the terms used in a very repetitive manner.
Would have loved the same book in a more concise manner.

I am new to investing, and so I set out to find a book that would help me learn the basics (terminology, pros/cons, and basic strategies) and this book gave me the info I was looking for. It is dry at times (I certainly struggled through the last two chapters on options and futures) but overall I felt that All About Investing is quite a useful resource, especially for beginners. I might go so far to say it reads much like a textbook, but on the upside, it’s not nearly as long as one might expect a finance textbook to be. I would definitely recommend this book to greenhorns wishing to take their hard-earned cash to the market.
