Commodities are pervasive throughout the world economy. Every day we buy food and energy. We drive our cars, which are made out of an assortment of metals and other materials. We live in homes and apartments, which are also made out of various commodities. Without these valuable materials, civilization would vanish. It’s that simple. On a global basis, commodities markets are massive and trade in trillions of dollars on a daily basis. There is also much diversity. For example, investors can invest in the following categories:
- Agriculture: Includes corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton, sugar, cocoa, orange juice, coffee, and oats.
- Livestock: Includes live cattle, feeder cattle, pork bellies, and lean hogs.
- Precious metals: Includes gold, silver, and platinum.
- Industrial metals: Includes copper, palladium, aluminum, tin, nickel, zinc, lead, and cobalt.
- Energy: Includes crude oil, unleaded gasoline, natural gas, coal, heating oil, uranium, ethanol, and electric power.
There are also a variety of ways for investors to participate in these markets. For example, these include buying and selling futures and options. There are also exchange-traded funds (ETFs), mutual funds, hedge funds, and managed futures. And yes, you can even buy the physical commodity, such as gold or silver, and put the metals in a vault.

All About Commodities By Tom Taulli pdf

This is just for beginners. It’s like general information about this theme.

Having little clue of the commodities markets before reading this book, it was a great introduction to the entire space. Having previously worked with Tom Taulli (disclosure: Tom and I have co-authored in the past) and after reading many of his other books, I expected a simple, straightforward roadmap for the core essentials of commodities, their history and markets and that’s exactly what All About Commodities gives.
The book is an easy read and is well organized to give the uninitiated a good resource on commodities. This isn’t a commodities bible, but a broad intro to all the major sectors so if you’re looking for a good foundation with little jargon and complexity, this is it.

I’ve been wanting to invest in commodities for some time. So I wanted to get a book that covers the gamut. That’s what Tom’s book does. He looks at all the major categories but also looks at some of the areas that often do not get much coverage.
Tom also shows the ways you can invest in commodities. These include futures, options, ETFs and so on. It’s done in an easy-to-understand way, with many helpful examples.
Along the way, you’ll find tips and techniques to improve your investment success as well. More importantly, Tom has advice on how to protect yourself from the risks.
Excellent book!

For my career, I’ve done very well with equities. This has been through starting and running companies as well as investing on Wall Street. But I know I have to look at alternative investments, such as gold. This has certainly been highlighted recently, as we’ve seen with the plunge in global stock markets (yes, seems like the only thing doing well is gold!)
That’s why I bought Tom’s book. He basically covers everything in an easy-to-read manner. He looks at all the main categories like energy, agriculture, industrial metals and so on. He also looks at all the ways to invest – whether by futures, options, ETFs and investing in miners. He even looks at going short on commodities.
Tom also provides some great insights on the long-term prospects for things like crude oil and gold – with a look at how to make changes to your portfolio.
So for anyone looking at investing in commodities, this is a must-have book!

Mostly outdated for the ETF age. If you are a small investor this is ok but really is aimed at investors that can buy 25,000 dollar contracts, muh of the info is outdated for a buy from home etf or mutual fund investor.

Another great product!!!

The book is well written for someone like me who knew enough to be interested but not enough to take action.
Just as I would find myself thinking “what?” The author seemed to explain the situation in the following pages.

I don’t know much on commodities although I wasn’t planning to start investing on commodities in near future, I just started to have vague curiosity. I spent a lot of time reading reviews and I chose this book based on the good review. And it did cover all my curiosity and met my expectations. I highly recommend this book for people starting.
